Offline Development Environment Part 1-A
So far not so good…
I have downloaded and tried out a number of different virtual machine linux images. So far none of them have worked. Oh, they boot just fine. But trying to get MySQL to work has presented a challenge so far. I’ve downloaded another larger image that seems to have MySQL already installed, and will give it a shot.
This is in reference to this post where I talk about trying to get a portable “offline” development environment. I need the full LAMP stack. Linux – Apache – MySQL – PHP is what that stands for, in case you’ve never seen that term or known what it meant.
I will say that I like SUSE from what I have seen so far. But getting MySQL to start is proving to be a challenge. It seems to be a socket error, and I can’t tell if the error is generated because of the confuration of the virtual machine or some other reason. MySQL has a link on their own web site to the virtual machine site… the link is dead, so it’s not really helpful.
But it would imply that it should work.
I’ll be busy this week, will have to wait until this weekend to try some more. I still have hopes that this will work. I certainly have the laptop horsepower to run it… I have a dual core CPU with 2GB of RAM and 100GB of hard disk. That should do it.

No progress so far, work has been absorbing all of my “fun time” for the past several weeks.
