I’ve said this in more than one place, but I’ll say it again here. I have a lot invested in phpBB2 and will not be in any rush to update to phpBB3. I definitely will not upgrade to the first release candidate, nor will I upgrade to the first “golden furry” release (or whatever they decide to call it). I’ve been around software long enough to know that version X.0 of anything just isn’t a good bet.

That’s not intended as a slam on the developers at all. It’s related to testing. There are plenty of folks out there with strange requirements or server configurations that haven’t had a chance (for one reason or another) to run the phpBB3 code. Once they do, you can bet there will be some issues that crop up. It’s a standard joke… release X.0 is just an extended beta test with more customers involved.

I expect that I will start looking at the code once the gold release is available. But I don’t expect to be abandoning phpBB2 for at least a year, perhaps longer.

Will I be left behind? That’s one way to look at it. But I will also be on a solid / stable platform with years of history and support behind it. That’s worth more to me than having the newest features. And the features that I’m working on for this site are not version specific, so even if I don’t personally start using phpBB3 on my boards I can start supporting it with MODs available via my MOD Manager.
