It’s Here!
So phpBB3 goes RC (Release Candidate) and they showed off the new proSilver style. Nice.
Don’t know what I’m talking about? I can’t imagine that you come here before going to phpbb.com, but if you haven’t been lately go. Now. Don’t read anything else here, just go.
(Edit March 19, several hours after the original post)
As was pointed out by a number of folks… whether phpBB.com is using RC or not, the download page still has the Beta 5 package. Details are in the comments.
The board at phpbb.com was updated to phpBB3, and the new uber-secret style that has been hidden from nearly everyone has finally been shown to the public. Note that the style (proSilver) is not in the CVS yet, only the phpBB3 version of subSilver is still there. From what I understand, phpBB3 will ship with both subSilver and proSilver when it’s ready.
I imagine there was a huge collective sigh of relief from the developers to reach this very important milestone. Not to mention a collective scream of excitement from all of those that have been waiting for phpBB3 to get to release candidate status so they can legitimately start using it on their boards.
I haven’t changed my mind about updating.
It will be interesting to see how much interest there is in phpBB2 MODs once phpBB3 really gets going.

Errm…it isn’t RC yet… It’s still BETA5…

Actually, phpBB3 is still B5 (at least that’s what’s Downloads list). And all the MODs are gone. Oh, and proSilver IS a blast!

Actually since I logged this blog with my RSS reader, I did see your entry first! First impressions? The index of the new skin is nothing special, but the viewtopic page is very cool. It’s much cleaner, I like it a lot.

RC1 is still not available to the best of my knowledge. Check out http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/
But great to see new style…my guess that tabs were going to feature and start to use them already in my MOD has paid off!!

Well, my mistake. I was basing my statement on the assumption that they would not use beta code on the live board. Hm.
damnian, there is a post about the MOD-DB being offline. From what was stated by Acyd Burn the downtime over the past few weeks was used to push ahead with the release of phpBB3 on phpbb.com. Some of the site features that are not related to phpBB3 aren’t quite ready.
Esmond, your comments continue to get tagged as spam. What have you done to irritate the Akismet folks?
John
I like proSilver, but there are some aspects of it that bug me. And the fact that the site (phpbb.com) is now fixed width rather than fluid bugs the heck out of me. Time for that later.
Thanks for correcting my “Release Candidate” comments, I’ll update the blog post accordingly.

You shouldn’t use Release Candidates for production sites either, for that matter, even if it’s your own product. That’s one way to instill confidence I guess.
Most of my sites have been fluid, but I recently moved to fixed (fixed for 1024px though) and I’ve come to appreciate it. First, it does appear a bit more professional for some reason, and secondly it simplifies web design when you don’t have to take into account what happens with super-wide browsers. To move, moving to fixed width is a positive thing. My impression on the new site is basically positive, although it does remind me of a blog rather than a home site for a product.
