Funny Shirt

Filed under: blog — Dave Rathbun @ 10:33 pm CommentsComments (1)

I saw a t-shirt today that was at least to my mind designed for the younger crowd that is more in touch with what is going on in today’s world. But it was really a nicely conceived t-shirt slogan as it could easily be taken in more than one way. I’m sure you will “get” the shirt… it reads:

get out of my space

Response time 20 days. :-)

It has been nearly that long since I’ve posted here. I’ve been launching another blog related to my “real job” and that’s taken some time away from phpBB work over the past few weeks. You can never have enough blogs, right? ;-)

One Year Ago

Filed under: blog — Dave Rathbun @ 8:41 pm CommentsComments (0)

I started the phpBBDoctor.com site several years ago (April, 2005-ish). It’s still not live. I started the blog about a year later because I felt like I wanted to talk about things but wasn’t really ready to open up the forum to public access yet. The first few blog posts were mainly about the blog itself. Over time the biggest topics have probably been my series about the phpBB search algorithm, various anti-spam techniques, and some stuff about MODs being written / released at phpbb.com.

Maybe I’ll have the Doctor board launched before I write the second anniversary blog post.

Or maybe not. :-)

Blogosphere Explosion

Filed under: blog — Dave Rathbun @ 10:20 pm CommentsComments (3)

I read a recent article in Discover magazine that said there were nearly 60 million blogs currently online, and about 175,000 new ones each day. They already did the math (I didn’t check it, I assume it’s correct ;-) ) that says that’s a new blog starting every half a second.

Can you “spoof” an IP Address?

The server logs report IP Addresses used to visit this site. My comment/spam process has started logging the IP address as reported by the server. My question is this: is it possible to spoof that data? Meaning, is it possible that the IP addresses that are recorded by this process are wrong?

Another anti-spam technique for my blog…

Filed under: blog — Dave Rathbun @ 9:54 am CommentsComments (8)

I continue to analyze the blog comments that get caught by Akismet and look for patterns that I can use. One of the very common patterns is, of course, the huge number of links, and I’m working on an idea for that. Another thing I have noticed is that a large number of blog comments post their links in both html and bbcode format. I can use that.

Hello, My Name is Dave, and I am an AOL User

Filed under: blog — Dave Rathbun @ 9:20 am CommentsComments (1)

It’s true, I am. I don’t like to talk about it much, given the rampant anti-AOL sentiment that seems to be the opinion du jour… mainly because I don’t feel like I should have to defend myself for my choice. :-) I actually joined in 1993, and have been a member ever since.

The initial reason that AOL was the right answer for me is no longer valid. And AOL seems determined to do whatever it can to encourage me to leave. Like their latest effort of adding their advertisements to my email messages. Before you ask, this post will not have a single thing in it related to phpBB, so you can stop reading here if you want. ;-)
